BTech Food Safety and Toxicology

The BTech Food Safety and Toxicology programme is aimed at producing competent Food Toxicologists who have the requisite knowledge and understanding of the properties of toxic substances in foods, and of the nature and magnitude of hazards and toxins present in foods.

Students develop the necessary capabilities in laboratory techniques for identifying and quantifying these toxic compounds for food safety and quality assurance, using state-of-the-art instrumentation and techniques.

Key areas covered include food chemistry, food microbiology, food analysis, food quality assurance, food toxicology, food processing and preservation, food packaging technology and entrepreneurship.

• SSSCE/WASSCE or equivalent: Three (3) credit passes (A–D or A–C6) in core subjects — English, Mathematics and Integrated Science — plus three (3) credit passes (A–D or A–C6) in relevant electives from one of the following groups:
  • Chemistry, Biology and Physics / Elective Mathematics
  • General Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Crop Husbandry, Chemistry and Physics / Elective Mathematics / Biology
  • Foods and Nutrition, Management in Living, Chemistry and Biology
• GCE A/O Level applicants: Five (5) GCE ‘O’ Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture, plus two GCE ‘A’ Level passes in any two of Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture.
• Applicants with Bachelor, HND and University Diploma degrees in science-related programmes are placed at a level based on the courses undertaken at the undergraduate level.
• Foreign students may be admitted based on qualifications from their home country, for which the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) shall determine equivalences and eligibility.

Mature Applicants

• Must be at least 25 years old.
• Must have a pure science, agriculture or home economics background from GCE O & A Levels or SSSCE/WASSCE.
• Must have at least two years of working experience in the food industry and pass an Entrance Examination.

Graduates are equipped for careers as food toxicologists, food safety officers and quality assurance analysts in food manufacturing and processing companies, analytical and public-health laboratories, research institutions, and regulatory bodies such as the Ghana Standards Authority and the Food and Drugs Authority.
