Koforidua Technical University (KTU), in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), convened a strategic stakeholder forum on private hostel accommodation for students on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, on the University campus.
The meeting brought together the principal actors in the student accommodation ecosystem to discuss and adopt an action plan for ensuring safe, secure, and standardised accommodation for KTU students.
In attendance were owners and managers of private hostels around the University, as well as representatives from the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Rent Control Department.
The engagement provided participants with insight into statutory requirements for operating hostel facilities, including licensing, fire safety certification, security and safety assessments, waste management, and tenancy management best practices.
In his remarks, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of KTU, Prof. Richard Ohene Asiedu, stated that the University recognises private hostel operators as key partners in providing essential accommodation for students. He assured stakeholders, parents, and the general public that KTU remains a safe and prestigious choice for technical and vocational education. He added that Management would work closely with state agencies to standardise all private hostels operating around the University.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Martin Otu Offei, on his part, underscored the need for stronger collaboration to ensure timely resolution of accommodation-related challenges.
The forum concluded with a unanimous resolution to endorse a partnership agreement in the coming weeks to ensure continuous monitoring and compliance improvement in all hostels.
Present from KTU Management were Prof. Richard Ohene Asiedu, Prof. Martin Otu Offei, Dean of Students Affairs, and Mrs Claire Owusu, Head of Estate Department.
The University Hall Masters supported them: Dr. George Aboagye Agyeman, Dr. Samuel Kwabena Ayittah, Dr. Abena Abraham, and Dr. Bernard Okoampa Otu, and the outgoing President of the Students’ Representative Council, Mr. Emmanuel Adjei Sowah as well as the Head in charge of the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kenneth Adjei Budu.
The representatives of the state agencies were Isaac Okraku Asmani, Senior Rent Manager, Rent Control Department (Koforidua); Dede Amanor, Assistant Standards and Quality Assurance Officer, Ghana Tourism Authority (Koforidua); DSP Stephen O. Nkansah, Adweso District Police Commander, Ghana Police Service and ADO1 Emelia Naayang from the Fire Safety Department, Eastern Regional Headquarters of the Ghana National Fire Service.
