Donation of Keyholders to KTU by Mr Samuel Osei Sarpong

We are delighted to announce the generous donation of 200 handcrafted KTU branded key holders by Mr. Samuel Osei Sarpong, a dedicated lecturer from the Fashion and Textiles Department. This final batch was presented to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Owusu, marking the completion of his remarkable contribution.

The initiative began on June 19, 2024, when Mr. Sarpong handed over the first batch of 83 handcrafted key holders to the Vice Chancellor. This presentation was witnessed by the Registrar, Evelyn Fafa Adom, and Professor Joseph Osei, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology (FAST). The initial batch served the main administration and the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology.

On July 24, 2024, the second batch was donated, covering all offices, laboratories, and classrooms across the entire university. This batch was also presented to the Vice Chancellor, with Professor Joseph Osei in attendance. In total, Mr. Sarpong’s efforts have resulted in 283 unique key holders for our institution.

Mr. Sarpong estimated the cost of each key holder at GHC 8 and explained the motivation behind his generous act: “As a lecturer, I often need to retrieve keys from the security post, which can be time-consuming due to worn-out labels or paper tags that are not befitting our university. I thought it wise to contribute in my own small way by creating these handcrafted key holders, reflecting our identity as a technical university.”

Prof. Owusu expressed his gratitude, praising Mr. Sarpong for his thoughtfulness and creativity. This initiative not only enhances our operational efficiency but also showcases the talent and commitment within our university community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Sarpong for his invaluable contribution, which exemplifies the spirit of innovation and dedication at Koforidua Technical University.

Koforidua Technical University and International Collaborators Drive Sustainable Innovation

Over two days, Koforidua Technical University (KTU) hosted a significant workshop in collaboration with the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

The workshop focused on sustainable innovations and brought together experts from various esteemed institutions.

Key Participants:

  • Kolawole Olonade from the University of Lagos , Nigeria
  • Joseph Mwiti from Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), Kenya.
  • Nimot Muili, MSc, FNSE, PMP from Arup, Nigeria
  • Kweku maichael Commeh from TCC, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
  • Dr. Wolfram Schmidt, Senior Researcher at Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und – prüfung, Germany

During the workshop, we reconnected with Prof.-Ing. Richard Arthur, a past winner of the German African Innovation Award (GAIIA), which I also received with Kolawole Olonade in 2018 for our research on sustainable materials from cassava peel ashes. Prof. Arthur’s work focuses on water hyacinth.

Workshop Highlights:

We identified synergies between our projects, discovering that both cassava peels and water hyacinth can be transformed into bio-based materials for clean concrete. With GIZ’s support, we installed a new facility at KTU and initiated the first clean pyrolysis run for water hyacinth, led by Dr. Anim Ofosu (Civil Engineering, KTU) and Dr. Bright Asante, Ph.D ( BAM).

This workshop demonstrated the importance of scientific networking and collaboration in advancing sustainable solutions. KTU remains committed to innovation and sustainability, leveraging partnerships and academic dedication to address environmental challenges. We thank all participants and supporters for their contributions to this successful workshop.
