In a world increasingly shaped by innovation and global collaboration, Koforidua Technical University (KTU) is steadily carving its name into the annals of international academic excellence. This vision was powerfully affirmed when the university’s Meldak Agro Team won the silver medal at the prestigious 2025 China International College Students’ Innovation Competition (CICSIC) in Kenya.

The two-day event, hosted by China’s Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) in collaboration with Kenya’s Egerton University and other partners, brought together 30 teams from African higher education institutions to present groundbreaking innovations in agriculture, health, energy, and environmental protection.

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated the Governing Council of Koforidua Technical University (KTU), with Prof. Kaku Sagary Nokoe appointed as Chairman.

Speaking at a brief but significant ceremony held at the GTEC Conference Hall, the Minister emphasized the critical role of technical universities in Ghana’s development agenda, particularly in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.

He urged KTU to deepen its focus on STEM programs to drive industrial innovation and position itself as a leader in applied research and skills development. He assured the University of Governments support and promised that KTU will be one of the Universities to benefit from the Italian government’s US$5 million grant to modernize technical education

He further stated that Ghana’s future is anchored on STEM, and institutions like KTU must lead the charge in transforming our economy through innovation and technical excellence,”.

In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Chairman of the Council, Prof. Kaku Sagary Nokoe, expressed his gratitude to the Minister for the opportunity to serve. He affirmed that the Council will champion curriculum that addresses Ghana’s evolving needs, promote industry partnerships that dignifies local ingenuity, and uphold institutional values that echoes the moral fiber and reset agenda of our nation.

He pledged to lead collaboratively, listen attentively, and act promptly and decisively to elevate KTU from excellence to eminence.

The reconstituted Council includes a distinguished team of academics, professionals, and public servants.

Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has officially entered into a strategic partnership with Thrive Africa, an organisation dedicated to accelerating digital skill development across the continent. The collaboration was formalised at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony held on campus.

KTU was represented by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Owusu, and the Registrar, Ms. Evelyn Fafa Adom, while Mr. Gad Ocran, Founder and CEO of Thrive Africa, signed on behalf of the organisation.

This landmark partnership sets the stage for transformative digital education initiatives aimed at empowering the next one million Africans with high-paying, in-demand digital skills. The collaboration will roll out short, intensive 3-month courses in cutting-edge areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and more.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ocran emphasised the urgency for students and the youth of KTU to embrace digital transformation. “In today’s rapidly evolving AI-driven world, it is crucial for young people to prioritise acquiring relevant, future-ready skills. We believe this partnership will serve as a bridge between academic learning and the real-world needs of the digital economy,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between academia and industry to ensure that students graduate not only with theoretical knowledge but with practical, job-ready expertise.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward KTU’s mission to become a hub for innovation, technology, and industry-ready talent in Ghana and beyond.

Koforidua Technical University (KTU), in its continuous commitment to health excellence and capacity building, successfully organised a three-day Malaria Diagnostic Refresher Training for its medical laboratory staff. The training took place from July 14 to July 16, 2025, and was aimed at enhancing the knowledge and practical skills of laboratory professionals in the accurate diagnosis of malaria, one of Ghana’s most prevalent public health concerns.

Organised in collaboration with health training facilitators and laboratory experts, the workshop brought together participants from the university’s health directorate and affiliated medical units. The training combined theory with intensive hands-on practice to ensure participants could confidently apply updated diagnostic procedures in their professional environments.

Core Components of the Training Included:

1. Pre-Training Assessment:
   Participants underwent a structured pre-test to evaluate their baseline knowledge and identify key areas of improvement.

2. Slide Preparation Techniques:
   Trainees were introduced to best practices in preparing high-quality blood smear slides, a fundamental step in malaria microscopy.

3. Parasite Identification:
   Guided microscopy sessions helped participants enhance their ability to detect and differentiate malaria parasites in blood samples.

4. Parasite Counting Procedures:
   Emphasis was placed on the proper methods for counting parasites per microliter of blood to ensure accurate disease staging and treatment planning.

5. Species Differentiation:
   Attendees were trained to identify the different species of malaria parasites — a critical skill for determining appropriate treatment regimens.

6. Post-Training Assessment:
   A comprehensive post-test was administered to evaluate knowledge retention, practical improvement, and overall mastery of the training content.

Impact and Outlook

The refresher training concluded with commendations from both facilitators and participants, highlighting its relevance and impact on laboratory practice. By equipping laboratory professionals with up-to-date diagnostic skills, the initiative is expected to improve the accuracy of malaria diagnosis at KTU’s health facilities and contribute positively to patient care outcomes within the university and surrounding communities.

This program underscores KTU’s dedication to professional development, public health advancement, and its role in supporting Ghana’s broader efforts to combat malaria through early detection and effective treatment.

The Women in Tech Seminar was organised to inspire and empower young women and girls—particularly female students—with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue careers in technology and related fields. The event was spearheaded by the Computer Science Students Association of Ghana (COMPSSA), Koforidua Technical University Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

The seminar recorded an impressive 80% increase in female participation, signalling growing interest among women in the tech space. The event was chaired by Dr. Ebenezer Komla Gavua, with insightful presentations delivered by Mr. Timothy Ayeke and Miss Veronica Oparebea Akotuah.

Participants were drawn from the department’s various academic programmes, including HND Computer Science and Network Management, BTech Computer Science, Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence.

Attendees expressed heartfelt appreciation to the University’s management for their continuous support and commitment to gender empowerment in STEM fields.

Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering industry-academia collaboration by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Furnart Ghana Limited, a leading manufacturer in the furniture and wood-processing sector.

The MoU outlines a framework for cooperation between the two institutions, with specific focus on practical training, internship placement, student projects, collaborative research, staff development, and technology transfer. The agreement will also facilitate the development of innovative furniture designs and sustainable production methods through joint ventures.

Present at the ceremony were members of the university management, including representatives from the International Programmes and Institutional Linkages (IPIL) office, as well as Heads of Department from Environmental Management and Technology (EMT) and Renewable Energy Engineering. The leadership of Furnart Ghana Ltd. was represented by the Chief Executive Officer and the Head of Finance.

The CEO of Furnart Ghana Ltd. expressed enthusiasm about the partnership and pledged the company’s full support to KTU in co-developing curricula that align with industry needs. He emphasized that the partnership represents a win-win for both parties and for national development.

The MoU marks another milestone in KTU’s strategic mission to promote applied research, skills development, and industry linkages in alignment with Ghana’s industrialization agenda.

As part of efforts to improve classroom standards and enhance student comfort, the Koforidua Technical University SRC has invested in 150 brand-new ergonomic chairs.

This initiative seeks to create a more supportive learning environment and ensures that both students and lecturers benefit from a space that promotes effective teaching and active participation.
