Brief history
How the Directorate came about
Research is a prominent activity that propels growth in every institution and KTU, on realising its importance, established the Applied Research Unit as part of the Department of Research and New Programmes in 2008. The establishment was in accordance with the 5-year strategic plan to coordinate research activities such as TALLIF and the Applied Unit in the University (formerly Polytechnic).
It was de-coupled from the Department of New Programmes and given the status of a Directorate in 2011. This absorbed all functions of research administration and other related activities.
The Directorate of Research and Innovation (DRI) is mandated to oversee and promote the research and innovation agenda of KTU. The Directorate over the years executes this agenda through a number of activities, categorised into four thematic areas.
The Directorate also has the ability to undertake more research initiatives. Therefore, researchers are consistently encouraged to come up with new ideas that would help them embark on innovative projects in applied research. The Directorate also encourages KTU faculties, administrators and students to actively participate and present their papers at the conferences and seminars that are organised.

Innovation & Technology Transfer
Moving research results out of the laboratory and into practice, and developing research centres.

Sourcing funds, writing proposals and administering the grants that pay for research.
