BTech Medical Laboratory Sci.

The Medical Laboratory Science programme offered at Koforidua Technical University (KTU) is practically based which body of knowledge is grounded in the basic sciences and also supported by some core clinical courses and internships in hospitals. The programme is to produce graduates who can efficiently collect, process and analyze biological samples of patients for the accurate diagnosis of diseases. The Medical Laboratory Science programme is student-oriented in order to allow for a close correlation between theory and practice. Supervision of students and the application of safety procedures in laboratory practice is the responsibility of Lecturers.

SSSCE applicants

Passes (A–D) in three (3) core subjects, namely English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, and three (3) passes (A–D) in relevant elective subjects. The cumulative aggregate must be 24 or better.

WASSCE applicants

Credit passes (A1–C6) in three core subjects, namely English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, and three (3) credit passes (A1–C6) in three relevant elective subjects. The cumulative aggregate must be thirty-six (36) or better.

GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level applicants

Six (6) GCE ‘O’ Level passes including English Language, Mathematics and General Science, plus three (3) GCE ‘A’ Level passes in the relevant courses.

Applicants from technical institutions

• Passes in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science plus passes in relevant elective courses.
• Applicants with the requisite elective passes but without passes in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science may be admitted to a two (2) month intensive bridging (pre-degree) programme before formal admission, after passing a selection examination.

Applicants with a technician certificate

• Passes in Motor Vehicle Technicians II (MVT II) — enrolled at Level 200.
• Passes in Motor Vehicle Technicians III (MVT III) — enrolled at Level 300.

HND applicants

• HND graduates with the requisite specialisation enrol at Level 300 (Level 200 for Mechatronics).
• A University Diploma in the relevant subjects enrols at Level 300; an Ordinary Technical Diploma (OTD) enrols at Level 200.

Technician applicants

• At least Part II and III Technician Certificate in EET or Radio & Television; or
• Telecommunication Technician plus English, Mathematics and Science; or
• EET II or Radio & Television Technician II; or
• Telecommunication Technician II with passes in English, Mathematics and Science at SSSCE/WASSCE level.

Mature applicants

• Applicants must be twenty-five (25) years old and show proof of age with a Birth Certificate and/or Ghana Card.
• Applicants must have five (5) years of working experience in the relevant discipline.
• Applicants must hold either a minimum of “E” in six (6) SSSCE subjects, or a minimum of “E8” in six (6) WASSCE subjects, in each case comprising three (3) core subjects (including English Language and Mathematics) and three (3) relevant elective subjects.
• Applicants must pass a written test in English Language, Mathematics and General Knowledge conducted by Koforidua Technical University.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science has thus put in place structures that will enable it to produce Medical Laboratory Scientists for both private and public sectors of the economy.

Graduates of B.Tech Medical Laboratory Science programme could be:

• Self-employed via the establishment of a private laboratory or selling of laboratory reagents and equipment.
• They could be employed in government hospitals such as teaching, regional as well as district hospitals and non-governmental hospitals.
• They could also be employed in food and drug agencies such as the Food and Drug Authority, quality control and toxicological unit of the pharmaceutical company.
• They could also work in research units such as Noguchi in Accra, KCCR in Kumasi and training institutions such as universities, diploma training colleges, etc.
• They could also work with the forensic laboratory of the police or criminal investigation departments, veterinary laboratories, industrial laboratories, etc.
