The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programme covers the fundamental principles and practices that help protect both human health and the environment in the context of workplaces, communities, and other public spaces. The programme provide knowledge on how to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement strategies for managing safety, health, and environmental issues.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) practices are closely associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focus on addressing global challenges such as environmental degradation, climate change, poverty, hunger and inequality.

EHS initiatives play a crucial role in helping organizations and communities contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by promoting human health, safeguarding ecosystems, and encouraging sustainable practices.

The specific outcomes of this course are as follows:

  • Demonstrate theoretical and conceptual knowledge in health, safety, and risk management.
  • Critically evaluate the ergonomics and human factors, and safety and risk management techniques.
  • Develop students’ skills to undertake safety studies and manage safety and risk to the best national and international standards.
  • Exhibit that they have acquired hands-on skills needed in health, and safety. And risk management.
  • Undertake basic research and innovations in the area of health, safety, and risk management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the ethics of the profession.

Minimum Entry Qualification

To be eligible for the M.Tech (Research) in Environmental Health and Safety, candidates must hold the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B-Tech./ B.A /BSc)

A first degree with a minimum of second-class lower division or better in relevant programmes such as Environmental Management & Technology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Allied Health related degrees. Students below the minimum of second class shall be required to pass an interview session.

Foreign Qualifications

All foreign qualifications would be referred to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission to Koforidua Technical University (National Accreditation Board Act, 2007 [Act 744 (2(2b)]). All foreign applicants must note that the American SAT, TOEFL etc, cannot in themselves be acceptable as entry qualifications into Koforidua Technical University.
